Introduction

Fully Depleted Silicon On Insulator (FD-SOI) is an innovative technology used in semiconductor manufacturing.

The NXP SoCs used in the Apalis iMX8, Apalis iMX8X and the Colibri iMX8X are built with this technology.

Advantages

Compared to the bulk-silicon transistors, FD-SOI has several advantages:

  • 28nm FD-SOI provides 10 to 100 times better immunity to soft-errors (SER) than its bulk counterpart.
  • By dramatically reducing leakage, reverse back-biasing (RBB) provides good power performance at very low voltages and a wide range of temperatures.

These advantages make the Apalis iMX8, Apalis iMX8X and the Colibri iMX8X a very good choice in applications where high reliability and/or low power are a requirement.
